Talking Turkey on Turkish TV

Have you ever seen the news and wondered how reporters always seem to find the most ignorant sounding person of the group to interview and broadcast over national television? Yeah, so that was me! I saw the reporter walking near us and was hoping she wouldn’t stop, but she did, at my seat. So, she asked me some questions and I answered despite being the most ignorant of Turkish history, geography, and culture in our group of 5. This all happened on a relaxing, inexpensive boat ride down the Bosphorus around 1pm. At 8ish I got a phone call from Taci’s friend telling me she had seen me on television. Apparently the station is one of the most popular in Turkey and is broadcasted throughout the entire country. The other girls were also shown, including a clip of Polly talking a picture – probably of the fortress, picture provided.

So was this a Jay-Leno-like question of whose face was on a lira note? Or did you let slip some international incident-causing remark? Dish, baby, dish! Inquiring minds, and all.

For the inquiring minds... I think mostly I just spoke with a fresh southern accent. But, there was an awkard pause when I answered the - where are you from - question with Alabama. Realizing the reporter didn't already know I was from the US I followed up with my country. A few more questions into the interview the reporter asked me what I thought of the Bosphorus. Not knowing exactly what she meant I said "Well, I guess we'll find out." Taci later pointed out that we were in the Bosphorus right then, which then and now still confuses me as to what sort of answer I was supposed to give. The interview ended when she asked why I had chosen to tour the Bosphorus instead of the beautiful southside beaches. The thought that went through my head was, "I didn't know about the beautiful southside beaches." But I answered just as truthfully with, "We came here by recommendation of our friends."

BTW Matt, I'm not sure who's on the lira, but if I had to guess it would be Ataturk. His statue is everywhere!

And Scot, talk about a surprising comment. I finally decided that maybe I answered one of Muhib's questions in the car on the way to Chaouen with a history of pageants. I can't for any other reason figure out why I would have told you that! Anyway, I got a good laugh out of it. Along with that, some of Taci's friends started calling me Queen Elizabeth, although I can't exactly remember why now.
